What Happened:

This is a large chunk of his childhood, from kindergarten to when he was around ten or so, largely focusing on interactions with his mother. She was the major focus of his life, growing up— his dad wasn't around, so it was just those two against the world most of the time. His mom was very poor, a teenage mom abandoned by her parents to raise her child. She'd had to drop out of high school to take care of Nick. She was often working double shifts as a stripper at a dance club on Bourbon Street just to keep their crappy condo in the Lower Ninth of New Orleans and food in their mouths. But she always said that Nick was worth it, she loved him. He loved his mom just as much, and grew very protective of anyone who would say the slightest bad word about her.
